Where did the custom of engagement rings start?

An engagement ring is much more than just another piece of jewelry. It symbolizes a great commitment in a relationship, and is displayed on the finger as proof of that. But the history behind this custom is ancient, dating back at least to the days of ancient Rome.

Roman women sometimes received two rings on their wedding day – a gold ring that they wore in public to demonstrate their status, and an iron ring for everyday wear at home.

In the Middle Ages (in 1477), Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave a ring to Mary of Burgundy in honor of their engagement. This gesture began to be seen as a model for all future engagements, and all the nobles at the royal court began to do the same. As these wealthy men set out on their travels, they caused the tradition of engagement rings to spread throughout the continent.

What are the main steps in choosing an engagement ring?

There are so many engagement rings to choose from that choosing the right one can be a daunting task. If you're planning to propose, here are the key steps you'll need to take on your wonderful journey towards a life together.

Step 1: Deciding on the center gemstone in the ring

The classic ones are set with a prominent diamond. However, there are rings set with multiple diamonds or colored gemstones, alone or in combination with the center stone. If you are planning to buy a ring set with a diamond, you should examine the characteristics that determine the value of the diamond:

During the wedding ceremony, the engagement ring is moved to the right hand, to make room for the wedding ring on the ring finger of the left hand. Some people wear the engagement ring over the wedding ring after the wedding.

Do men wear engagement rings too?

While it is customary for women to wear engagement rings, men can also wear an engagement ring to demonstrate their commitment to a relationship.
